If you're starting a cleaning business in Westhoughton or taking on your first van in Horwich, finding several hundred pounds for a website can feel like a stretch. That's where pay monthly websites come in: little or nothing upfront, then a fixed monthly fee.
We sell one, so we're not neutral. But we'll be straight with you: pay monthly is a cash-flow choice, and it's not usually the cheapest option overall. Here's how it works, what to check, and how to decide.
What is a pay monthly website?
Instead of paying for the website to be built and then paying separately for hosting and updates, you pay one monthly fee that covers everything. Typically that includes:
- Building the site
- Hosting, and the padlock (https) that keeps it secure
- Backups and security updates
- A set amount of small edits each month
You usually sign up for a minimum term. After that, you either carry on, switch to a cheaper plan, or leave.
How much do they cost in the UK?
Prices vary a lot, so check each provider's terms. As examples of published prices: UK Web Marketing advertises managed websites from £49 a month [1], and Scalesites advertises a built-for-you site at £45 a month with nothing upfront and a 12-month minimum [2]. Ours is £79 a month with a 24-month minimum (details below) [3].
The monthly figure on its own doesn't tell you much. What matters is what's included, how long you're tied in, and what you end up owning.
The pros
Easier on cash flow
You get a professional site without a large upfront bill. If you'd rather keep money in the business for tools, stock or insurance, that can matter more than the total cost.
Hosting, security and updates included
You're not left with a site that slowly goes out of date. Someone else keeps it running, backed up and patched.
A fixed, predictable cost
One amount, every month, so it's easy to budget for.
The catches to check
Minimum terms
Many pay monthly deals tie you in for a set period. Examples include 12 months [2] and 24 months (ours) [3]. Check whether you can leave early, and what it costs if you do.
The total over two or three years
Multiply the monthly fee by the minimum term and compare it with paying upfront. The difference can be hundreds of pounds (see the worked example below).
Who owns the domain and the site?
This is the big one. Ask: - Is the domain name registered in your name, or can it be transferred to you? - If you stop paying, do you keep the site, get a copy, or lose it? - Is there an exit fee?
What counts as an "edit"?
"Unlimited changes" and "small edits included" can mean very different things. Ask for an example of what's covered, and what happens when you need more.
Pay monthly vs upfront: a worked example
Here's our own pricing as an example, taken from our pricing page on 13 October 2026 [3]. The figures are simple arithmetic.
| Over 24 months | Pay Monthly | Pay upfront + Care |
|---|---|---|
| Build | Included | £549 (Starter) |
| Hosting and Care | Included | £29 × 24 = £696 |
| Total | £79 × 24 = £1,896 | £1,245 |
So, over two years, paying upfront with a Care plan costs about £650 less. Care has a 12-month minimum from launch, then runs monthly with 1 month's notice [3], so you could also drop it later and pay even less.
Why would anyone choose pay monthly, then? Because the first payment is £79 instead of £549. For a new business, getting started without a big outlay can be worth the extra.
Who pay monthly suits (and who it doesn't)
It can suit you if: - You're starting out, or cash is tight right now - You want everything (hosting, updates, edits) handled for one predictable fee - You'd rather not think about the website at all
Paying upfront may suit you better if: - You can afford the build cost now - You want the lowest total cost over time - You want a shop or a bigger site (some pay monthly plans, including ours, cover simpler sites only)
Questions to ask any provider before you sign
- What's the minimum term, and what's the exit fee if I leave early?
- What's the total I'll pay over the minimum term?
- Is the domain in my name, or will you transfer it to me free?
- Do I get a copy of my site at the end, or if I leave?
- How many edits are included, and what does extra work cost?
- Are prices plus VAT?

How Yesmo's Pay Monthly works
Here's exactly what you get, from our live pricing page and FAQ [3][4]:
- £79 a month for a Starter website: up to 5 pages, contact form, map, and local search set-up. Pay Monthly covers the Starter site only, not Business sites or shops.
- No build fee upfront. Your first £79 payment is due at sign-up.
- Hosting and Care included: backups, security updates and 30 minutes of edits a month. You can upgrade to Care Plus for £20 more (£99 a month).
- 24-month minimum. You can leave early: £22.88 of each payment counts towards the £549 build, so the early-exit fee is £549 minus what you've already paid towards the build, and never less than £0.
- After 24 months, you get a full copy of your site, and you can keep Care at £29 a month, Care Plus at £49, rolling monthly, or neither.
- You own your words, photos and domain from day one. We transfer the domain to you free whenever you ask.
- No VAT to add: we're not VAT-registered, so prices are final.

The bottom line
Pay monthly websites are worth it when cash flow matters more than the total cost. They're not a trick, but they're not the cheapest route either. Check the minimum term, the exit fee and who owns what. Then compare the full total with paying upfront.
